(The Water Knife, by Paolo Bacigalupi. Knopf, , pp., $) reviewed by Zeke Teflon Following his frightening yet entertaining corporate capitalism/GMO sci-fi-disaster novel, The Windup Girl (), Paolo Bacigalupi wrote a string of young adult books. He's finally delivered another eco-disaster sci-fi novel, The Water Knife. I've been anticipating this book keenly, as it's set mostly. This mind-at-the-end-of-its-tether tone did not seem to condone defeatism or any throwing-in of the towel, at least for Bacigalupi himself. Since that review he has produced three books, one of which, The Drowned Cities, deals explicitly with issues congruent with those in van Gelder's tome. But all three of those books were aimed at young adults; The Water Knife is Bacigalupi's first. 'The Water Knife' Cuts Deep Equal parts thriller and alarm call, Paolo Bacigalupi's new novel depicts a future America ravaged by drought. Reviewer Jason Heller says Bacigalupi keeps the plot taut.

The water knife is a pretty torrential but enjoyable take on the apocalypse, there's no virus, no nuclear fallout, it's much easier to imagine than that. It’s all about Water. The good old USA is suffering from a distinct lack of rain, so much so that the southern states, Texas and New Mexico are all but abandoned, the Texans are struggling to survive along with the other unfortunates of society.
